BONG COUNTY – Local authorities and elders of Bong County have commended ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) for initiating and supporting a medical outreach program aimed at bringing healthcare services to thousands of villagers in hard-to-reach communities.

The outreach was officially launched in Zoweintaa on November 25, 2025. Speaking at the event, Dr. Garfee Williams, Chief Medical Officer of ArcelorMittal Liberia, explained that this is the first medical outreach in Bong County implemented in collaboration with the government through the County Health Team.

Dr. Williams noted that the government classifies hard-to-reach areas based on the number of hours required to access the nearest health facility and has therefore mandated health workers to take medical services directly to those communities.

In response, AML decided to support the initiative by providing essential medicines, which county health teams in all AML operational areas will distribute to residents suffering from common and treatable illnesses.

He added that while the current outreach focuses on diseases prevalent in the targeted communities, AML is considering expanding the service to address additional health conditions, including eye-related problems.

Local government officials and health sector representatives expressed deep appreciation to AML, noting that the outreach will significantly benefit residents who struggle to access medical facilities.

Gayflor Sumo Nyangwebah, Director of the Community Health Department, praised AML for the donation of essential drugs and urged beneficiaries to make themselves available when health workers visit their communities.

“Please turn out to be treated as AML has shown us this great gesture. The birds will not finish the rice,” he said.

Also speaking at the program were Albertha Dianue of AML’s Community Relations Department and Edmund Saye Gbah of Community Development, who reaffirmed the company’s commitment to community well-being.

Freeman Myten, Clan Chief of Wota Clan, expressed gratitude on behalf of the people, saying,

“We are happy today that ArcelorMittal has brought medicine to us. We highly appreciate this gesture and thank everyone who came to support this medical service.”

Meanwhile, Kpaai District Commissioner James T. Kpoquoi described the outreach as a product of strong partnership and mutual cooperation between ArcelorMittal Liberia, the government, and local communities.
