Boakai Establishes High-Level Committee to Investigate Economic Disparities

By: Kabina S Kabah

MONROVIA – President Joseph Boakai has announced the formation of a Presidential Ad Hoc Committee to investigate economic disparities affecting ordinary Liberians.

The committee, chaired by Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, is tasked with conducting a thorough review and delivering actionable recommendations within 45 days.

Speaking during the commemoration of Liberia’s 178th Independence Anniversary, President Boakai acknowledged the “contradiction” in the current economic climate where indicators show national progress, but citizens continue to suffer under high transportation costs, surging prices of basic commodities, and the prohibitive cost of building materials.

“This contradiction, where import costs have fallen yet market prices remain high, requires urgent attention,” President Boakai declared.

“Therefore, I am establishing a High-Level Presidential Ad Hoc Committee to investigate these disparities and recommend practical solutions for our immediate action.”

Economic Growth Amid Persistent Hardship

President Boakai noted that while Liberia’s economy is making “steady progress,” domestic revenues remain constrained and many families are grappling with the harsh realities of inflation.

The prices of essential goods such as flour, sugar, and cooking oil remain elevated, and transportation expenses continue to strain household budgets.

“Building materials are still expensive, making it hard for ordinary Liberians to construct homes and businesses,” the President added.

The committee, which will operate with urgency and independence, is expected to consult market actors, traders, importers, and regulatory institutions to understand the root causes of price inconsistencies.

Its final report will include clear, practical solutions aimed at stabilizing the market and promoting economic fairness.

Highlighting Progress, Promising Reforms

Despite these economic challenges, President Boakai used the national address to highlight visible strides in infrastructure, agriculture, and Liberia’s global image.

He praised the country’s road network improvements, citing enhanced accessibility to southeastern counties such as Maryland and Grand Gedeh — even in the heart of the rainy season.

“Our farmers are producing more food, and the price of rice, vegetables, and other local produce has reached the lowest point in many years,” he said.

On the international front, the President affirmed Liberia’s strengthened diplomatic presence and renewed confidence among international partners. He emphasized that Liberia is “rewriting the narrative” about its people and its future.

“Liberia is moving forward and building on the gains of the last two decades with focus and determination,” he said. “We are improving Liberia’s image on the international stage.”

A Call for National Unity and Shared Responsibility

As the country marked 178 years of independence, President Boakai called for unity, transparency, and accountability across all sectors of government and society.

He urged Liberians to support ongoing reform efforts and remain hopeful as the nation continues its journey toward inclusive growth and economic justice.

“We will not ignore the pain that many families feel,” he concluded. “We are listening, and we are acting. This committee is just one step — but a critical one — toward restoring fairness and trust in our economy.”

The announcement has sparked cautious optimism among market observers, civil society groups, and the business community, who now await the committee’s findings and proposed interventions.
