BOMI COUNTY – Pregnant women in Bomi County have been lauded for increasingly seeking medical services at health facilities, a trend credited with drastically reducing maternal deaths in the county.
County Health Officer, Dr. Annet Brima David, described this development as a milestone in the fight against maternal mortality. She noted that the number of pregnant women accessing health services from conception to delivery has significantly improved.
“Between April and June of this year, Bomi County recorded zero maternal deaths—a historic achievement,” Dr. David said. “This shows that when pregnant women take advantage of health services, safe delivery is possible.”
The County Health Team attributes this success to awareness campaigns, community engagement, and women making informed decisions about their health. The Ministry of Health recently recognized Bomi County’s Health Team as the best-performing team nationwide in the fight against maternal deaths.
“This recognition is not just for us as health workers, but also for the pregnant women of Bomi who trusted the system and made use of it,” Dr. David emphasized.
To further strengthen maternal health, the County Health Team has introduced measures to support expectant mothers in rural areas.
An ambulance has been stationed in Suehn Mecca District, one of the county’s most challenging areas, to transport pregnant women and other patients to health facilities. This initiative is expected to improve access to care in remote communities where transportation has long been a barrier to safe delivery.
Dr. David urged all pregnant women in Bomi County to continue utilizing local health facilities to ensure safe childbirth and better maternal health. “We want to assure every woman that the facilities are there for them. Using these services not only saves lives but also gives their children a healthy start,” she said.
The Bomi County Health Team remains committed to sustaining these gains and ensuring that no woman dies while giving life.
