Empowering Communities: New Human Rights Taskforce Launched in Bomi County

By: Gabriel M. C. Parker

BOMI COUNTY – In a significant step toward strengthening human rights protections at the grassroots level, the Independent National Commission on Human Rights (INCHR), in partnership with Plan International Liberia, has launched a County-Level Mechanism Taskforce in Bomi County.

The initiative was officially introduced during a daylong event on Tuesday, May 8, which drew a diverse group of participants, including civil society advocates, youth representatives, traditional leaders, and community members from across the county.

Tasked with monitoring and reporting human rights violations, the newly formed taskforce will also manage related data and information to promote accountability and justice within Bomi County.

Providing an overview of the initiative, INCHR executive Kpannah Wilson explained that the commission is working alongside both local and international partners to safeguard the rights of all Liberians. “This effort is not only about protecting rights but also about empowering communities to become active agents in the promotion of justice and democratic values,” Wilson said.

She emphasized the importance of strengthening Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) as frontline actors in building a more just and equitable Liberia. The broader vision, Wilson noted, is to ensure that the rights of every citizen—regardless of background or status—are upheld in line with national and international human rights standards.

Speaking on behalf of the county leadership, Bomi County Superintendent Miatta Dorley praised the launch of the taskforce and pledged her administration’s full support.

“This initiative is timely and necessary,” Dorley said. “I encourage all parents, guardians, and community members to respect the rights of their children and one another. We must promote a culture of dignity and inclusion in our homes and neighborhoods.”

The event concluded with an interactive dialogue session, where attendees discussed strategies for improving community-level reporting of human rights abuses and building stronger cooperation among stakeholders.

As Bomi County takes this important step, organizers hope the taskforce will serve as a model for other regions, creating a network of empowered communities committed to justice, equity, and the protection of human dignity.
