EU $48M Power Project Sets to Transform Lives in Sinoe County

By: Sampson W Weah

Greenville, Sinoe County – The Superintendent of Sinoe County, Mr. Peter Wleh Nyensuah has warmly welcomed the European Union Ambassador to Liberia, Amb. Nona Deprez, on her official on a long visit to the county.

The visit underscores the European Union’s commitment to overseeing the progress of its US$48 million electricity initiative, which seeks to provide power to residents of Grand Bassa, Sinoe, and Grand Kru Counties.

The electricity is expected to supply over 4,888 residents under this transformative project.

Superintendent Nyensuah commended the EU for its significant investment, emphasizing that the initiative will greatly enhance the quality of life for many in the region.

He reaffirmed the county administration’s dedication to collaborating with development partners to ensure the project’s successful execution.

The electricity project will be sustained through two major energy sources: the SRC Hydro Plant and a solar power facility in Murryville.

During her visit, Amb. Nona Deprez, alongside Superintendent Nyensuah and National Port Authority Managing Director Sekou Dukley toured key project sites, including Murryville and SRC, to evaluate ongoing preparations.

The European Union and its implementing partners have urged local authorities to promote awareness about the project’s significance emphasizing that while challenges may arise during the implementation phase, resorting to violent demonstrations should not be an option.

Instead, they encouraged constructive dialogue and cooperation to ensure the project’s success for the benefit of all residents.

The first phase of electricity distribution is scheduled to commence in December 2025, marking a crucial milestone in the ten-year agreement. Furthermore, the European Union has committed to renovating the old Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) building, which will serve as the central power hub for Sinoe County.

The project will also enhance operations at all of Liberia’s ports, including the Samuel Alfred Ross Port of Greenville. With improved electricity supply, port activities are expected to increase, boosting economic growth and trade efficiency across the country.

Superintendent Nyensuah urged all stakeholders, including community leaders and local residents, to embrace and support the initiative, recognizing it as a key driver of economic progress and improved living standards in Sinoe County and beyond.
