Judge Carey Urges Liberians to Uphold Rule of Law as Foundation for National Progress

By: Peter Darblo

Bomi County –The Resident Judge of the 11th Judicial Circuit Court, His Honor T. Ciapha Carey, has issued a powerful call for all Liberians—regardless of background or status—to embrace the rule of law as the cornerstone of peace, development, and national unity.

Speaking at the formal opening of the August Term of Court in Tubmanburg, Bomi County, Judge Carey emphasized that no individual or institution is above the law, and that genuine progress can only be achieved in an environment governed by justice and order.

“Violence brings nothing but division, destruction, and hatred,” Judge Carey declared. “The rule of law is the recipe for development and peace. It is the path to building a better future for everyone.”

A Call for Accountability and Trust in Justice

Judge Carey underscored the importance of lawful conduct by both government officials and private citizens, describing legal adherence as “cardinal and essential” for maintaining public trust in Liberia’s institutions.

He stressed that judges, lawyers, and other judicial actors must remain fair and impartial in their duties, noting that the credibility of the justice system depends on consistent application of the law.

“When fairness is upheld, citizens will develop trust in the justice system. And when that trust grows, the nation becomes stronger,” he said.No one is above the law—absolutely no one.”

Message to Political Actors

In a particularly pointed message, Judge Carey cautioned political leaders and activists against promoting or inciting violence.

He urged all political actors to resolve disputes through lawful and peaceful channels, highlighting that democratic progress relies on respect for institutional processes.

“Peaceful coexistence and national development cannot thrive where there is lawlessness. We must all, including our political leaders, commit to the rule of law in word and deed,” he added.

A Timely Reminder

As Liberia continues to navigate its post-conflict democratic journey, Judge Carey’s remarks come as a timely reminder of the role the rule of law plays in securing stability, national cohesion, and sustainable development.

The opening of the August Term of Court marks not just a legal formality but an opportunity for reflection, civic responsibility, and renewed commitment to justice for all.
