NIMBA COUNTY – The Liberia Airport Authority (LAA), in partnership with Samaritan’s Purse International Relief, has officially commenced the rehabilitation of the Sanniquellie Airstrip, marking a significant milestone in regional infrastructure development.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Wednesday, June 11, in Sanniquellie, with local government officials, community stakeholders, LAA executives, and representatives of Samaritan’s Purse in attendance.
The $125,000 USD project is aimed at enhancing regional air connectivity, improving access to humanitarian services, and catalyzing economic growth across Nimba County and beyond.
The rehabilitation work is being carried out by Jungle Water Group of Investment, a well-respected Liberian construction firm, with a projected completion timeline of six months.
During the ceremony, Hon. Mark Kuiah, Deputy Managing Director for Operations at the Liberia Airport Authority, highlighted the strategic importance of the initiative.
“This initiative aligns with our national aviation development agenda. We extend our gratitude to Samaritan’s Purse for their continued support and active involvement in Liberia’s aviation sector,” said Hon. Kuiah.
“We also urge local authorities to increase public awareness of safety protocols, especially as aviation is still relatively new to this environment. It is our duty at LAA to ensure the airstrip meets international aviation standards.”
Samaritan’s Purse, a globally recognized Christian humanitarian organization, reaffirmed its commitment to the project. A representative noted that the airstrip would significantly enhance the organization’s ability to deliver timely relief services to communities in need.
“Aviation brings speed. When help is needed quickly, we can now respond effectively through this airstrip. This is not just infrastructure; it’s a channel for both service and ministry,” the representative stated.
Speaking on behalf of the local government, Nimba County Superintendent Hon. Kou Meapeh Gono expressed appreciation to both LAA and Samaritan’s Purse, reflecting on past challenges and the transformative potential of the project.
“This airstrip is more than a transportation facility—it represents a pathway to economic opportunity and access to critical services for the people of Nimba County,” Superintendent Gono remarked.
Local residents have responded to the announcement with enthusiasm, anticipating improved access to goods, services, and new opportunities in tourism and trade.
As the Sanniquellie Airstrip rehabilitation project moves forward, the Liberia Airport Authority reiterates its commitment to building a modern, inclusive aviation network that connects all regions of Liberia while upholding international safety and operational standards.
