Liberia Urged to Secure Fuel Supplies Amid Rising Global Tensions

NATIONAL NEWS

MONROVIA Hon. Musa Hassan Bility, Representative for District 7 in Nimba County, has issued an urgent call to the President of Liberia, His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., urging proactive measures to safeguard the nation against potential disruptions in petroleum supply due to escalating conflicts in the Gulf region.

In an open letter addressed to the Executive Mansion, Hon. Bility highlighted the vulnerability of Liberia’s economy, which relies entirely on imported petroleum for transportation, electricity generation, and the functioning of businesses across the country.

He noted that Liberia does not maintain large strategic reserves, leaving it exposed to sudden global supply shocks.

“History has repeatedly shown that conflicts in the Gulf region have immediate consequences for the global supply and price of petroleum products. Liberia must not underestimate its vulnerability in such circumstances,” Hon. Bility wrote.

The legislator stressed that the government should act with foresight, securing existing petroleum stock as part of a temporary national reserve and considering additional imports while international supply channels remain accessible. He emphasized that the financial cost of preparedness now would be far less than the economic and social consequences of fuel shortages.

Fuel disruptions, Hon. Bility warned, could have sweeping effects—rising transportation and food costs, interrupted electricity supply, slowed economic activity, and increased burdens on ordinary Liberians.

“Preventing such a crisis should always be preferable to managing one after it begins,” the letter reads, urging the government to prioritize national preparedness in the face of global uncertainty.

Hon. Bility concluded by appealing to the President’s sense of shared responsibility, stating that early action would ensure stability and protect the livelihoods of Liberians during these unpredictable times.
