SINOE COUNTY – The Government of Liberia, through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in partnership with UNDP Liberia, has officially launched construction works for a landmark coastal resilience project in Sinoe County.

The groundbreaking ceremony, held earlier this week, marks the commencement of the “Enhancing the Resilience of Vulnerable Coastal Communities in Sinoe County” project — a bold initiative to combat the growing threat of climate change-induced coastal erosion.

Funded by a substantial US$8.9 million grant from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the project is designed to protect vulnerable coastal communities through a range of climate adaptation strategies.

It is implemented by the EPA under UNDP Liberia’s Energy & Environment Programme, as part of its Inclusive Green Growth Portfolio.

The Sinoe Coastal Resilience Project aims to build hybrid adaptation infrastructure, including coastal revetments, support for resilient livelihoods, and improved access to climate information for at-risk communities.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, stakeholders underscored the project’s potential to serve as a model for coastal protection efforts nationwide.

The event brought together national and local government officials, representatives from key ministries including Public Works, Mines and Energy, Agriculture, and Internal Affairs, as well as the Sinoe Legislative Caucus, traditional leaders, and local community members.

“This project represents a critical step forward in Liberia’s climate resilience agenda,” said an EPA representative at the event. “By investing in infrastructure and sustainable livelihoods, we are not only protecting our environment, but empowering communities to thrive in the face of climate change.”

Sinoe County, with its rich biodiversity and coastal settlements, has experienced increasing environmental vulnerability over the years.

The implementation of this project is expected to significantly mitigate risks, enhance local resilience, and promote sustainable development.

As construction begins, stakeholders have pledged continued collaboration and community engagement to ensure the successful delivery of the project and long-term benefits for the people of Sinoe County.
