Liberty Party Urges Respect for Rule of Law, Calm, Mediation in House Leadership Stalemate

MONROVIA – The Liberty Party has expressed grave concern over the ongoing leadership stalemate at the House of Representatives, a crisis that has dragged on for nearly six months – undermining national governance at a critical time.

In statement issued Monday April 28, 2025, the LP emphasized that the current impasse not only distracts the government from its urgent business but also threatens the very principles of coordination among the three branches of government as envisioned by the Constitution of Liberia.

“The paralysis at the House of Representatives has the potential to cripple national development efforts and derail President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s administration as it strives to restore Liberia’s standing and deliver essential social services to our people,” said Liberty Party Political Leader, Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence.

The Liberty Party then welcomed President Boakai’s recognition of the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the dispute; noting that respect for judicial outcomes is fundamental to the health of Liberia’s democracy.

The Party also commended the majority bloc at the House for opting to pursue legal recourse through a motion for re-argument before the Supreme Court — a move it said aligns with the highest ideals of the rule of law.

“Respect for the rule of law is the bedrock of any thriving democracy. We therefore call on all parties, stakeholders, and interest groups to exercise restraint, allow the legal process to run its course, and avoid actions that could further destabilize the nation,” The LP Statement said.

The Liberty Party further urged all factions within the House of Representatives to place the interests of the Liberian people above partisan considerations. The Party proposed mediation as the most viable path to resolving the impasse and called on all parties to embrace dialogue over confrontation.

“At this delicate moment in our national journey, we must not allow political ambitions to fuel division. We vehemently denounce any attempts to exploit the current situation for narrow political gain,” Senator Karnga-Lawrence asserted.

The Liberty Party reaffirmed its commitment to democracy, peace, and national unity and pledged to continue advocating for the rule of law as the foundation for Liberia’s growth and stability.
