MEDIA FOR HUMANITY Liberia: Using Media to Promote Peace and Humanity

By: Staff Writer

The media globally remains a crucial force in shaping society—not only through information sharing but also by impacting communities in many significant ways.

In Liberia, the media continues to advance this role, utilizing print and broadcast platforms to contribute meaningfully to national development.

In this spirit, MEDIA FOR HUMANITY Liberia, a non-profit organization, was founded to harness the media’s unique ability to make a difference. Comprising experienced media practitioners and professionals from various backgrounds who share a common vision, MEDIA FOR HUMANITY is dedicated to promoting humanity and peace through their expertise.

According to the organization’s Formation Head, Liberian broadcast journalist Eldred Wlemongar Thomas, the establishment of MEDIA FOR HUMANITY stems from the critical role the media plays in fostering peace, humanity, and strengthening democracy.

“Journalists and professionals from different fields recognized the need for such an organization to amplify this impact,” Thomas said.

MEDIA FOR HUMANITY envisions redefining the noble essence of journalism. Thomas explained, “Our goal is to collaborate with humanitarian organizations—both national and international—the Government of Liberia, the Liberian press and its auxiliaries, civil society groups, and development partners to ensure our objectives are fully realized.”

The organization’s formation was inspired by the experiences of journalists over the years while carrying out their reporting duties across Liberia and beyond. These encounters sparked a deep passion and a strong desire to support and promote humanity for all.

Thomas emphasized that MEDIA FOR HUMANITY aims to go beyond traditional reporting. The organization plans to take practical steps by engaging in community support and interventions that restore the dignity of the less fortunate and disadvantaged.

MEDIA FOR HUMANITY seeks to redefine the media’s watchdog role by strengthening and amplifying advocacy in areas of humanity, contributing to national growth and development through peacebuilding and the promotion of human dignity.

Additionally, the organization places great importance on maintaining and upholding ethical media standards while driving its humanitarian and peacebuilding programs.

Key areas of focus for MEDIA FOR HUMANITY Liberia include:

  • Humanitarian interventions
  • Community outreach and awareness
  • Organizing and facilitating humanitarian and peacebuilding training
  • Education, health, and sanitation
  • Women’s rights and children’s advocacy

Journalist Eldred Thomas calls on media colleagues, individuals, institutions, and organizations—both public and private—to support the initiative financially and materially.

With over ten years of practical media experience, Thomas has worked with UNIML Radio as an intern, Radio Veritas, Fabric Radio, Joy FM, and others, serving as a reporter, news presenter, and in various other roles.

Most recently, he was Director of News and Trainer, Acting Station Manager, and subsequently Station Manager of AHTEENAH Radio in Grand Kru County from 2020 to 2023. From February 2024 to November 2025, he served as Media Monitoring Officer in the office of the immediate past Speaker, Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa. Thomas is also a media development professional.
