Grand Kru – The Ministry of Mines and Energy has issued an immediate closure order halting all mining operations in Duogbo City, Grand Kru County, after a compliance team confirmed widespread illegal mining in the heart of the city.
This marks the second closure order for Duogbo City this year, following a similar directive earlier in 2025 that was reportedly ignored by local operators. The Ministry’s decision is aimed at protecting the environment, enforcing the Minerals and Mining Law and Exploration Regulations, and holding violators accountable.
Mayor Augustine K. Negba and Youth Vice President Folley Odaba have both attested to the closure order, supporting the Ministry and state security agencies in monitoring the enforcement of the halt.
A compliance enforcement team led by Chief Mining Engineer James Smith documented massive land disturbances caused by heavy machinery, including excavation pits measuring approximately 27 and 24 meters in depth at different locations.
The report warns that continued illicit mining could undermine local infrastructure, including the foundations of homes and the main road connecting Duogbo City to Barclayville.
The Ministry also highlighted that some local authorities have been complicit in facilitating illegal mining, further exacerbating the problem.
Authorities are urging community members to resist inducements from individuals seeking to establish unlawful mining operations in their areas.
The Ministry of Mines and Energy reaffirmed its commitment to strict enforcement in the sector and called on residents to cooperate fully to protect both the environment and community infrastructure.
