MONROVIA – The National Elections Commission (NEC) has delivered 500 Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits to the National Identification Registry (NIR) headquarters in Congo Town—a significant step toward enhancing citizen enrollment across Liberia.
This deployment forms part of a broader collaboration between NEC and NIR, aimed at strengthening the registry’s technical and operational capacity.
The shipment includes essential components such as computers and solar panels, following a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two institutions.
The MoU was signed at NEC headquarters in Sinkor by NEC Chairperson Madam Davidetta Browne Lassana and NIR Executive Director Andrew Peters, in the presence of key government officials and other stakeholders.
Ahead of the delivery, a joint technical team from both institutions conducted a comprehensive review of NIR’s ICT systems to address potential logistical challenges.
While experts note that some system adaptations may still be needed to ensure smooth integration, the move is widely viewed as a major step toward resolving past technical issues that hindered the issuance of national ID cards.
Originally used by NEC during the 2023 voter registration process, the BVR kits are now expected to significantly improve NIR’s capacity as it prepares to resume nationwide citizen registration in the near future.
