MONROVIA President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has officially nominated Associate Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay to serve as the next Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Liberia. The nomination, announced Monday, is subject to confirmation by the Liberian Senate.

The move follows constitutional provisions under Article 54(c) of the 1986 Constitution, which empowers the President to appoint judicial officers, including the Chief Justice, subject to Senate approval.

The nomination also comes in accordance with Article 72(b), which mandates the retirement of Justices at the age of seventy—signaling a transition in the judiciary’s leadership.

In a formal letter to Senate Pro-Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, President Boakai lauded Justice Gbeisay as a “distinguished jurist” who has shown “exemplary integrity, profound legal acumen, and commitment to upholding the rule of law and the Constitution.”

The President urged the Senate to act swiftly, stating, “I respectfully request the Honorable Liberian Senate to expeditiously consider and confirm this nomination.”

If confirmed, Justice Gbeisay will assume the role of Chief Justice, continuing a career marked by years of service on the bench and a reputation for fairness and judicial diligence.

Justice Gbeisay’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for the Liberian judiciary, as the country navigates ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening the rule of law and public trust in the legal system
