Monrovia Nimba County District #3 Representative Nehker E. Gaye has thrown his weight behind Senator Nya Twanyen in condemning what he described as the “perennial and malicious manipulation” of national leaders involved in legislative visits to ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML).

In a strongly worded statement, Rep. Gaye accused some Senators and government officials of undermining the interests of the Liberian people through secretive arrangements.

“In a Representative democracy, the interest of the people matters more to we who are given the popular mandate to aptly represent them, and as such we should protect their interests at all times,” Gaye declared.

Demands Halt to Legislative Field Visit

The Nimba lawmaker, currently attending an official function outside Liberia, argued that both he and the Nimba County Legislative Caucus should have been fully involved in the ongoing legislative field visit to AML’s concession area.

“I believe that I should be officially informed along with the caucus of the county,” he said, stressing that the absence of Nimba lawmakers undermines the credibility of the exercise.

Gaye called on House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon and the leadership of the Legislature to immediately halt the field visit until the body officially reconvenes.

We Will Not Be Used

The Representative cautioned against what he termed as political manipulation, warning that lawmakers must not allow themselves to be used for selfish gains at the expense of their constituents.

“We understand more issues that affect our people and therefore we should be deeply involved, and not few members who sit and design plans from the Capitol to undermine our advocacy,” he noted. “We will not allow ourselves to be used as political vehicles to accomplish their selfish gains.”

Rep. Gaye reaffirmed his commitment to the people of District #3, Nimba County, vowing to resist any attempt to sideline the county’s lawmakers in decisions affecting their citizens.
