VP Koung Calls for Unity, Constructive Accountability as Senate Opens Third Session

NATIONAL NEWS

CAPITOL HILL Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung Sr. has urged members of the Liberian Senate to prioritize unity, patriotism, and constructive governance as the 55th National Legislature formally opened its Third Regular Session.

Delivering a statement at the Senate’s opening on Monday, Vice President Koung described the Legislature as a critical pillar of Liberia’s democracy, emphasizing its role in lawmaking, oversight, and accountability.

He said the new session comes at a defining moment in Liberia’s democratic journey, one that demands courage, cooperation, and national interest above partisan considerations.

The Vice President commended the Senate for its historic role in passing Liberia’s first national budget exceeding one billion United States dollars, describing the milestone as a strong signal of the country’s readiness to pursue bold development goals.

“This was not just a financial milestone, but a statement of national intent,” Koung said, noting that the achievement demonstrated the Legislature’s commitment to putting Liberia first.

He called on Senators across political lines to work together in crafting laws and policies that strengthen governance, deepen democracy, and uphold the rule of law, adding that political diversity should be a source of strength rather than division.

Vice President Koung also praised the opposition for its constitutional responsibility to hold the government accountable but cautioned against what he termed destructive politics, including personal attacks and false allegations.

He stressed that accountability is most effective when it is constructive and rooted in dialogue, evidence, and national interest.

Turning to the ruling party, the Vice President urged continued discipline and humility, stressing that leadership should be measured by tangible results rather than promises.

He said governance must remain people-centered and responsive to the everyday realities of citizens.

Koung reaffirmed President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr.’s commitment to the full implementation of the ARREST Agenda, which he said is aimed at transforming lives, restoring public confidence in state institutions, and building a resilient economy.

Acknowledging that job creation remains a major national challenge, the Vice President said the government is taking deliberate steps through the execution of the national budget to stimulate investment, expand electricity access, revitalize agriculture, strengthen infrastructure, and support private sector growth.

“These efforts are not overnight solutions, but necessary foundations for long-term prosperity,” he said.

He concluded by reminding lawmakers that Liberians are closely watching the work of the Legislature and expect sincerity, cooperation, and progress.

Vice President Koung expressed hope that the Third Regular Session would be remembered as one marked by unity, maturity, and national renewal, with Liberia choosing dialogue over division and nation over party.
