MONROVIA – The Director of the Witness Protection Agency of Liberia, Teklo Maxwell Grigsby II, has emphasized that protecting witnesses is fundamental to strengthening the rule of law and ensuring accountability in Liberia’s criminal justice system.
Speaking during an appearance on OK FM, Atty. Grigsby said the effectiveness of the justice system largely depends on the willingness of witnesses to come forward and testify without fear of intimidation or retaliation.

He noted that when witnesses feel safe and protected, they are more inclined to cooperate with investigators and provide testimony that can help courts reach fair and lawful decisions.
According to the agency’s director, the Witness Protection Agency of Liberia is tasked with providing protection and support to individuals whose safety may be threatened because of their role in sensitive investigations and prosecutions, particularly in cases involving serious crimes and corruption.
Grigsby, however, cautioned against attempts to exploit the system, stressing that the agency remains committed to carefully assessing all reports before granting protection.
“The program exists to protect individuals who face genuine threats because of their role in the pursuit of justice. It will not be allowed to become a tool for false alarms or misleading claims,” he warned.
He also disclosed that the agency’s recruitment process is being carried out in partnership with the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission and the Civil Service Agency of Liberia, a move he said is intended to ensure transparency, competence, and professionalism within the institution.
“Our focus is to build a credible and professional institution that the public can trust. Without public confidence, witness protection cannot effectively serve its purpose,” Grigsby said.
He added that the agency will continue strengthening mechanisms that allow witnesses to safely provide information, while contributing to a justice system that protects those who speak out and ensures that offenders are held accountable.
