NIMBA COUNTY – In a continued show of support for education and skills development in Liberia, ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) has donated US$50,000 to Nimba University. The contribution is part of the company’s annual commitment under the terms of its Mineral Development Agreement (MDA) with the Government of Liberia.

The check was officially handed over on Thursday by Joseph Sloan, Coordinator of the Team Support Unit within AML’s Sustainability and External Relations Department.

During the presentation, Sloan emphasized AML’s dedication to advancing higher education in Liberia, especially in fields aligned with the mining industry. He noted that the funds are specifically intended to benefit the university’s Mining Engineering and Geology programs.

“This contribution highlights ArcelorMittal Liberia’s ongoing commitment to developing the next generation of mining and geology professionals right here in Liberia,” Sloan said.

Receiving the donation, Assistant Professor Emmanuel A. Donseah, Dean of the College of Engineering and Geoscience, expressed gratitude on behalf of the university. He praised AML for consistently honoring its MDA obligations and stated that the funds would be used to purchase vital laboratory equipment.

The roots of Nimba University’s Mining and Geology School trace back to the 2005 Mineral Development Agreement between AML and the Liberian government. Initially a branch of the University of Liberia’s Department of Geology and Mining, the program began receiving direct support from AML in 2011, when the company contributed US$200,000 through the Commission on Higher Education to aid with materials and capacity-building efforts.

Over the years, AML has significantly contributed to the growth of the program. In addition to financial assistance, the company has provided expert lecturers during the school’s early development. In 2014, AML facilitated a technical partnership with the Ghana School of Mines to support curriculum development and staff training—an initiative that was unfortunately disrupted by the Ebola outbreak.

With this most recent contribution, AML’s total financial support to Nimba University has reached US$675,000, covering both annual commitments and outstanding payments since 2012.

This sustained investment reflects AML’s broader commitment to sustainable development and its belief in the transformative power of education. The company remains a dedicated partner in shaping Liberia’s future workforce, particularly within the extractive industries.
