Accra, Ghana – The Healthcare Federation of West Africa (HFWA) is currently hosting its Annual General Meeting in Accra, bringing together over 50 participants from across the region.

The event has attracted key stakeholders, including the presidents of the Healthcare Federations from 11 West African countries—namely Liberia, Ghana, Nigeria, Côte d’Ivoire, Sierra Leone, Niger, Senegal, Togo, Benin, and Mali.

Also in attendance are representatives from international health institutions, including the World Health Organization (WHO) West Africa, the West African Health Organization (WAHO), and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).

The meeting focuses on evaluating the achievements and challenges faced by national healthcare federations and strengthening collaborations with their respective Ministries of Health. Discussions have centered around capacity building, policy implementation, and sustainable healthcare financing.

Speaking at the high-level meeting, Mr. Momolu S. Johnson, President of the Healthcare Federation of Liberia (HFL), emphasized the need for robust capacity-building programs targeting private healthcare workers. He also underscored the importance of fostering stronger collaboration between healthcare federations and national ministries to improve health service delivery.

Mr. Johnson addressed the critical issue of resource mobilization and management, particularly in light of the anticipated reduction in USAID funding.

He highlighted the active role of the HFL in working with Liberia’s Ministry of Health to finalize the Liberia Health Equity Fund—a national health insurance policy aimed at providing universal health coverage regardless of economic, social, or religious status.

The meeting is expected to conclude with the election of a new Executive Board for the Healthcare Federation of West Africa. Mr. Johnson noted that Liberia’s representation on the board would be a strategic advantage for the country and its healthcare system.

He has nominated Dr. Nicole Cooper, CEO and Medical Director of Wellness Partners Clinic, to serve as Second Vice President—a candidate he pledged to actively support and campaign for during the election.
