Boakai Establishes High-Level Task Force in Response to U.S. Concerns

MONROVIA – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has established a high-level Presidential Task Force in response to serious concerns raised by the United States Government—concerns that, if left unaddressed, could result in the imposition of a travel ban on certain Liberian officials.

The President’s move follows formal communication from U.S. authorities highlighting governance and accountability issues across several Liberian government institutions. In a bid to coordinate an urgent and comprehensive national response, President Boakai will personally chair the newly formed Task Force, signaling the gravity with which his administration views the matter.

The Task Force is cross-sectoral in nature and will include representation from seven critical institutions: Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Health, Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs, Liberia National Police, Office of the National Security Advisor and National Security Agency

The inaugural meeting was convened on June 17, 2025, at the Executive Mansion, and was chaired by President Boakai himself. Attendees included the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Justice, the Inspector General of Police, the Minister of State without Portfolio for Special Services, and the National Security Advisor.

According to an official statement from the Executive Mansion, the Task Force has already formulated a joint multi-sectoral work plan aimed at swiftly and effectively addressing the U.S. concerns. The plan will be implemented in collaboration with the United States Government and monitored through a dedicated evaluation framework to ensure transparency, accountability, and tangible results.

Speaking after the meeting, President Boakai reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to good governance, the rule of law, and Liberia’s “longstanding and valued partnership” with the United States.

“This Task Force is a demonstration of our seriousness and resolve. Liberia remains committed to reform, institutional integrity, and protecting its international reputation,” the President stated.

The creation of the Task Force marks one of the strongest inter-agency governance responses under the Boakai administration and reflects a growing urgency within the government to address both domestic and international expectations around transparency and accountability.

The U.S. Government has yet to issue a formal response to the formation of the Task Force but is expected to remain closely engaged in the process.
