Bomi County Confirms First Case of Monkeypox Virus

By: Gabriel M.C Parker

BOMI COUNTY – The Bomi County Health Team has officially confirmed the outbreak of the Mpox virus in the county following the detection of one confirmed case.

The confirmation came after health authorities identified a suspected case in Klay District and swiftly responded.

According to County Health Officer Dr. Annet Brima David and County Surveillance Officer Moses Fomba, a sample was collected from a fourteen-month-old child and sent to the National Reference Laboratory in Monrovia for testing.

“The specimen was carefully collected and dispatched to the National Reference Laboratory in Monrovia,” Dr. David explained during a press briefing with journalists. Laboratory results later confirmed that the child tested positive for the Mpox virus.

Health officials report that the infected child is currently receiving treatment and responding positively to medical care.

“We want to assure the public that the County Health Team is on top of the situation,” stated Moses Fomba. “There is no need to panic. We have activated our response mechanisms and are closely monitoring the case.”

The Health Team emphasized that all necessary measures are being implemented to prevent the virus from spreading across the county. Community Health Volunteers, surveillance teams, and contact tracers have been mobilized to identify potential cases and raise public awareness.

The County Health Team is working closely with the Ministry of Health and other partners to ensure a swift and effective response.

“We encourage everyone to follow recommended health protocols, report any suspicious symptoms, and visit the nearest health facility if feeling unwell,” Dr. David urged.

Symptoms of Mpox include fever, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, and a distinctive skin rash. The virus spreads through close contact with an infected person or animal.

Residents are reminded to remain calm, practice good hygiene, and stay informed through verified health channels as the situation continues to be monitored.
