Tensions Mount in Southeast Liberia Over Unresolved Boundary Dispute

By: Karino Teah

SINOE COUNTY – Tensions are escalating in southeastern Liberia as concerned citizens of Sinoe County raise fresh alarms over a longstanding land dispute with neighboring River Cess County.

On Monday, May 26, 2025, dozens of residents voiced their frustrations in an interview with journalist Karino Teah, criticizing both local and national leaders for what they described as a troubling silence on the issue.

At the core of the dispute is an unresolved boundary conflict between the two counties—a matter that has lingered for years without meaningful intervention or resolution. Residents accused both county authorities and national government officials of neglecting the matter, warning that continued inaction could lead to open conflict.

“We want peace with our River Cess neighbors,” one resident said. “But we need clear boundaries and accountability from our leaders.”

The absence of official demarcation has sown confusion and fueled tensions among communities living along the contested border. Reports of minor confrontations and increasing mistrust have surfaced in recent months, raising fears of a potential crisis if the issue remains unaddressed.

Citizens are now calling for urgent intervention from traditional leaders, lawmakers, and even the Office of the President.

They are also urging the Ministry of Internal Affairs, land experts, and civil society organizations to facilitate an inter-county dialogue aimed at de-escalating tensions and finding a fair and lasting resolution.

As frustrations grow and concerns over possible unrest mount, the people of Sinoe County hope their renewed outcry will prompt immediate and decisive action from national authorities.

With the situation becoming increasingly volatile, all eyes are now on Liberia’s leadership to respond swiftly and wisely—before the conflict spirals out of control.
