MONROVIA – The embattled Speaker of the House of Representatives Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa has resigned.
Koffa’s Monday resignation might bring to an end a protracted political and legal battle that fractured the House of Representatives for more than six months.
His resignation follows sustained pressure from a majority of the lawmakers who accused him of financial mismanagement, poor leadership and conflicts of interest.
The political storm surrounding his tenure reached a tipping point when over 50 members of the House signed a resolution declaring his removal.
Despite denying all allegations, Koffa maintained that the process used to unseat him lacked fairness and transparency.
The leadership challenges at the House of Representatives, marked by court challenges, walkouts, and competing sessions has severely affected the functionality of the House.
With his resignation, lawmakers and observers alike are hopeful the lower house can now move forward with renewed unity and focus.
Speaking with scores of reporters on Monday, Cllr. Koffa denied reports that his depature was influenced by money but said it was as a strategic decision meant to further avoid chaos at the legislature.
“I can’t negotiate the law. If I resign, that’s the inevitable part of the law that a new speaker has to be elected. The vacancy is crated.” He said.
