Government Shortlists 56% of Volunteer Teachers for Employment

The Minister of Education, Dr. Jarso Marley Jallah, has announced that 2,000 volunteer teachers will be placed on the Government of Liberia payroll as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the education sector.

She was speaking at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism’s regular press briefing on Tuesday on March 25, 2025

Minister Jallah emphasized that salary top-ups within the Ministry of Education have taken effect as part of human resource reforms.

The Education Minister then highlighted key changes in the sector, stating that the reforms are already making a significant impact.

The Minister noted that some volunteer teachers do not meet the required qualifications, as they lack a “C” or “B” teaching certificate or higher education experience in the field.

She outlined the new salary structure for teachers, specifying that those with a “C” certificate will receive US$185, “B” certificate holders will earn US$200, while holders of a BSc degree will be paid US$450, and those with a Master’s degree will be paid US$550.

Student Protest in Monrovia

The Minister of Education on Tuesday frowned on continuous protestation by students of the government run Monrovia Consolidated School System (MCSS).

Dr. Jallah emphasized that those influencing students to demonstrate will be held accountable.

She stressed that students should be in classrooms learning, rather than being used for political or social unrest.

One Day Policy

Meanwhile, the Education Minister has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the “One-Chair Policy,” which is being implemented in collaboration with the Civil Service Agency to ensure efficiency and transparency in the education sector.

“We need better education for every child to create a conducive learning environment for all Liberian students,” Minister Jallah stated.

The announcement comes as part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance teacher welfare, improve education quality, and ensure that only qualified individuals are employed in the teaching profession.
