Grand Bassa Gets US$6.5-Million Grant for Electrification

Grand Bassa County – Grand Bassa County has received US$6.5-million grant from the European Union to go towards electrification of Buchanan City and parts of the county.

12,000 homes to be electrified with 12,000 free meters distributed in 2026.

In 2024, the government launched the Light Up South-East (LUSE) Project, a European Union-funded initiative focused on rural electrification in South-eastern Liberia.

The LUSE Project is expected to connect over 12,000 customers in Buchanan and 4,344 households in Greenville, installing hundreds of LED streetlights. A 2MW mini-hydro power plant on the Sinoe River will further support Greenville’s power needs. Additionally, Barclayville will benefit from a solar PV plant and mini-grid network, improving access for remote communities.

The disclosure for the grant towards the electrification of the county was made on Monday when Finance Minister Augustine Ngafuan led high-level delegation, including EU Ambassador Nona Deprez and other partners, on a five-day field visit to Buchanan and Greenville.
