Liberia Charts New Path for Sports with One-Day Strategic Policy Framework

By Perry B. Zordyu

PAYNESVILLE – The Ministry of Youth and Sports has concluded a one-day comprehensive strategic policy framework session on Liberia’s National Sports, aimed at fostering national sports development.

Held on Monday in the Minister’s conference room, the strategy seeks to provide a clear framework and direction for sports, while positioning the sector as a vital driver of Liberia’s socio-economic growth, human development, peaceful coexistence, and national integration.

The policy also establishes the National Sports Advisory Board to guide and enhance sports programs and activities, while developing specialized programs at the university and TVET levels to create pathways for diverse careers in sports and physical activity.

During the day-long meeting, Youth and Sports Minister Cllr. Jeror Cole Bangalu emphasized that the framework will elevate the National County Sports Meet into a prestigious national league designed to nurture competitive spirit and showcase local talent.

He disclosed that a team of professionals will conduct a comprehensive assessment of sports facilities in schools and training institutions, documenting their current conditions and identifying infrastructure gaps as a means of fast-tracking improvements.

The strategy also underscores the importance of history and unity, highlighting plans to commemorate April 6 as the International Day of Sports for Development and Peace across Liberia.

Minister Bangalu further noted that creating a Pyramid System to develop talent from grassroots to elite levels, implementing programs to broaden participation, and investing in workforce development for coaches, officials, and administrators remain top priorities under his leadership.

He stressed that upgrading sports infrastructure to meet international standards will bridge the long-standing gap that has hindered Liberia’s recognition by international football federations.

“Through these initiatives, the Ministry aims to increase Liberia’s participation in international sporting events and build a vibrant, inclusive sports culture that drives both national pride and sustainable development,” Minister Bangalu stated.

He therefore encouraged staff to remain persistent in ensuring that sports and youth development reach every citizen across the country.
