United Kingdom – Liberia has joined maritime nations from across the globe for the 34th Session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly, which officially opened today at the IMO Headquarters in London.

The Assembly, the highest governing body of the IMO, convenes all member states to discuss crucial global maritime issues, including shipping safety, environmental protection, and the effective implementation of international maritime instruments.

This year’s session focuses on several key agenda items: the approval of the IMO Work Programme and Budget for 2026–2027; the election of 40 member states to the IMO Council for the 2026–2027 biennium; and the adoption of resolutions touching on port State control, maritime safety, the inspection and survey regime, and strengthened enforcement of IMO conventions.

Representing Liberia at the Assembly is the Head of Delegation and Commissioner/CEO of the Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA), Cllr. Neto Zarzar Lighe Sr.

In his remarks during the opening session, Commissioner Lighe reaffirmed Liberia’s steadfast commitment to upholding international maritime standards and advancing a safer, greener, and more efficient global shipping industry.

He also used the occasion to highlight Liberia’s bid for re-election to Category A of the IMO Council — the Organization’s top decision-making body.

Liberia currently holds a prestigious position among the world’s leading maritime nations, and Commissioner Lighe stressed that maintaining this Category A seat is vital to ensuring the nation’s continued influence in shaping global maritime governance.

“Liberia’s presence in Category A reflects not only our status as one of the world’s largest ship registries but also our active leadership in promoting safety, sustainability, and innovation within the maritime sector,” he said.

As part of its campaign efforts, Liberia will host a major reception later this week, with 150 delegates expected to attend.

The event, scheduled for Friday, November 28, will showcase Liberia’s achievements and strategic priorities as it seeks re-election to Category A of the IMO Council.

The 34th IMO Assembly runs through November 29, bringing together senior maritime officials, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to chart the course for the sector’s future.
