Liberian Woman Charged with Attempted Murder After Abandoning Newborn

By: James Kollie

LOFA COUNTY – The Liberian National Police have charged 21-year-old Saybah Kollie with multiple offenses, including attempted murder and endangering the life and well-being of a child.

According to authorities, Kollie allegedly gave birth to a baby girl, wrapped the newborn in a plastic bag, and abandoned her in a swamp.

The incident occurred on Monday, June 8, 2025, in Mawolo’s Town, Voinjama District. The infant was later discovered alive by children who were fishing in the area.

Following the incident, Kollie reportedly confessed to members of the community and was taken to Vezala Clinic for initial medical treatment.

She was later transferred to Telewoyan Memorial Hospital for further care, a move facilitated by the county gender supervisor, Madam Deddeh K. Karmoh.

After receiving treatment, Kollie was discharged and turned over to the police for questioning, during which she confessed to the crime. She has since been formally charged and her case referred to the Voinjama Magisterial Court.

However, Associate Magistrate Ben B. Blama has stated that the matter falls outside his court’s jurisdiction.

According to the police charge sheet, Kollie’s actions violate Sections 10.1 and 16.4 of the New Penal Law of the Republic of Liberia.

If she fails to post bail, she will remain in custody at the Voinjama Central Prison pending trial. If convicted, she faces up to five years in prison, as the offense is classified as a second-degree felony.
