Doe Family Snubs Weah’s Condolence Package, Raising Questions of Rift

MONROVIA – The family of the late former First Lady Nancy Doe has declined a condolence gift from former President George Weah, just days after he visited the grieving household to express his sympathy.

During his weekend visit, Mr. Weah pledged a condolence package that included two cows, US$5,000 in cash, and 50 bags of 25kg rice. However, the family has refused the donation without publicly stating the reason behind the rejection.

Tensions between the Doe family and the former president have previously surfaced. Mamie Doe, daughter of the late First Lady, had earlier accused Mr. Weah of mistreating her mother during her lifetime—an allegation Mr. Weah strongly denied during his recent visit.

He maintained that he had always treated Mrs. Doe with respect befitting her status as a former First Lady of Liberia.

The rejection of the condolence gesture has sparked discussions both online and offline, with many Liberians questioning the underlying reasons for the refusal and what it signals about relations between the Doe family and the former president.

Mrs. Nancy Doe was the widow of former President Samuel K. Doe and served as First Lady from 1980 until her husband’s assassination in 1990.

As of now, the Doe family has not issued an official statement regarding their decision.
