Lofa Farmers Turn to Corn Production as Local Group Breaks New Ground

By: James Kollie

Lofa County – Farmers in Lofa County have long struggled with corn production, largely due to the absence of buyers and lack of market opportunities.

However, a local agricultural group 4 United Brothers Vegetables Agriculture Inc. Liberia—has taken a bold step by launching large-scale corn cultivation in the region.

Originally formed to focus on vegetable farming, the group has expanded its operations to include corn as part of its 2025 agricultural plan.

This year, the organization cultivated four hectares of lowlandat Koima Junction in Voinjama District, marking a significant shift toward commercial corn production.

Speaking to journalists on July 28, 2025, during the first day of harvest, Christopher Mawolo, head of the organization, said that corn production in Lofa has traditionally lacked value-added opportunities.

Most local farmers, he noted, plant small quantities of corn primarily for household consumption rather than for sale.

“There has been very little commercial production of corn in Lofa,” Mawolo explained. “Our goal is to scale up and supply institutions involved in poultry farming here and across Liberia.”

Mawolo added that with the Government of Liberia preparing to launch a national egg production initiative in October, his organization is ready to collaborate by supplying corn in large quantities to support poultry feed needs.

He called on agricultural development institutions and partners to provide technical and logistical support for their efforts.

During a brief visit to the farm, Lofa County Senator Cllr. Joseph K. Jallah praised the organization for its initiative and commitment to local food production. He also emphasized the urgent need for storage facilities across Lofa and the country, pointing out that such infrastructure is critical for preserving surplus produce and enhancing food security.

“Building storage facilities will help farmers across Liberia manage their harvests better and reduce post-harvest losses,” Senator Jallah stated.

The move by 4 United Brothers Vegetables Agriculture Inc. signals a promising step toward transforming corn into a commercially viable crop in Lofa County—one that could support not only local food systems but also national agricultural goals.
