Abuja, Nigeria – In a surprise twist at the top of West Africa’s legal fraternity, Ousmane Bouba Traore has stepped down as President of the West African Bar Association (WABA), citing personal reasons. His resignation is effective immediately.
Stepping into his shoes is no stranger to the legal corridors of power — Liberia’s own Cllr. Bornor M. Varmah, who now becomes the Acting President of WABA. Varmah, a celebrated International Trade Lawyer and current President of the Liberian Bar Association, is expected to bring both experience and stability to the organization at this crucial time.
WABA described Traore’s brief tenure as one of “unwavering commitment to justice and human rights,” while expressing full confidence in Varmah’s leadership. Speaking during a virtual Executive Committee meeting held on June 13, Varmah stated:
“I am honored to assume this responsibility at such a critical juncture. We remain committed to the shared vision of a just, democratic, and peaceful West Africa.”
WABA’s leadership also reaffirmed its dedication to defending the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary throughout the sub-region.
In an official notice, all national bar associations in West Africa have been informed of the leadership change. A General Meeting will be convened soon in Nigeria, with the exact date to be announced.
