Senate Passes Landmark Bill to Establish National Sports Fund Authority

CAPITOL HILL – The  Liberian Senate has passed an act to create the National Sports Fund Authority. This new agency will be tasked with managing and overseeing funds dedicated to promoting various sports disciplines nationwide, with particular emphasis on football, the country’s most popular sport.

The Senate’s decision came on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, following a detailed report and recommendation from the Senate Committee on Youth and Sports.

The committee’s endorsement highlighted the urgent need for a sustainable mechanism to finance sports development in Liberia.

Senator Jonathan Boye-Charles Sogbie, representing River Gee County and the primary proponent of the bill, underscored the importance of the new authority. “The National Sports Fund Authority will serve as a critical vehicle to secure consistent funding for our athletes, sports infrastructure, and training programs,” he said.

According to Senator Sogbie, the Fund will be financed through a combination of levies, government allocations, grants from international bodies, and private sector donations.

To generate the necessary revenue, the legislation proposes the imposition of taxes on sports-related supporting materials and other related items. This approach is designed to ensure a steady flow of resources, reducing the traditional reliance on sporadic and unpredictable funding sources.

Once operational, the National Sports Fund Authority is expected to transform Liberia’s sports sector by providing a reliable, long-term financial foundation.

It will facilitate enhanced infrastructure development, promote talent identification and nurturing, and improve training standards across various sports disciplines.

Sports enthusiasts and officials alike have welcomed the Senate’s action, viewing it as a crucial step towards elevating Liberia’s presence in regional and international competitions.

The establishment of the Authority marks a new chapter in the country’s commitment to leveraging sports as a vehicle for youth empowerment, national pride, and social cohesion.

The bill now awaits further legislative procedures before becoming law, but with the Senate’s overwhelming support, experts anticipate swift progress towards operationalizing the National Sports Fund Authority.
