MONROVIA – Several volunteer teachers under the Monrovia Consolidated School System (MCSS) are growing increasingly frustrated due to the government’s failure to honor a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed earlier this year.
Months ago, the volunteer teachers staged a multi-day protest to express their dissatisfaction with issues including delayed stipend disbursements, lack of salary top-ups, and the absence of formal employment opportunities.
In response, the government announced that it had entered into an MOU with the teachers to address their concerns.
However, according to the aggrieved volunteers, the government has yet to fulfill its commitments under the agreement. With tensions rising, the teachers have warned of unspecified actions if the government continues to delay implementation of the MOU.
Samuel Brown, Chairman of the MCSS Volunteer Teachers Association, issued a stern warning to the school system’s leadership, urging them to take the teachers’ plight seriously and respond with urgency.
“Since we singed the MOU, the MCSS is yet to honor its portion. This isn’t the agreement. We are calling on the authority of the MCSS to take due note because if they fail, there will unspecified action,” Brown said.
He cautioned that any forthcoming action from the volunteers could severely disrupt the school system if swift steps are not taken to resolve the matter.
“For months now we are yet to get pay. Nothing we are hearing about the MOU we signed. No one is saying anything. How do they expect us to cater to our families? This wasn’t the agreement. We are tired and our next action will not be a good one for the school,” one of the angry volunteer teachers said loudly.
