Liberia Declares War Against Mob Justice

By: Sampson W Weah

Monrovia – Liberia’s Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh, on Tuesday officially launched the government “Anti-Mob Violence Month”, rallying national support against what he described as a “growing epidemic of lawlessness.”

Speaking at the unveiling of the campaign banner, Cllr. Tweh delivered a sobering indictment of the spike in mob violence across the country — branding it a direct threat to Liberia’s legal order, democratic governance, and the safety of its citizens.

“Mob violence has become rampant in our society. It threatens not only the lives of our citizens but the very foundations of law, order, and democratic governance,” Tweh declared.

His comments come in the wake of a disturbing series of incidents — from mobs torching accident vehicles and storming police stations to forcibly releasing detainees and executing suspected criminals without trial.

“These are not isolated events. They are signs of a dangerous trend that we must arrest immediately,” the Minister warned.

The month-long campaign, spearheaded by the Ministry of Justice in collaboration with the Liberia Chamber of Commerce and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), will feature a nationwide media blitz, grassroots community engagement, and targeted outreach to youth, traditional leaders, and civil society.

“Mob violence is a crime — plain and simple,” said Tweh. “It is a violation of our laws and an affront to democratic values. This government will not condone it.”

As part of the broader strategy, the Ministry is deploying a massive public awareness initiative through radio, dramatizations, town hall meetings, and educational materials — aiming to “dismantle the myths and misconceptions” fueling mob justice.

“Let this campaign banner serve as a symbol of our collective resolve — that true strength lies not in violence, but in unity and justice,” Cllr. Tweh emphasized.

In a heartfelt appeal, the Attorney General urged all Liberians to reject mob violence and embrace lawful, peaceful means of resolving conflict:

“Let us choose dialogue over destruction, understanding over hostility, and lawful action over mob rule. Every act of mob violence endangers lives and undermines national progress.”

“Today’s victim could be your neighbor. Tomorrow, it could be you or your loved ones. We must act now. Let us be the voices of peace in a time too often silent in the face of violence. The time to act is now.”
