NIMBA COUNTY – In a significant step toward sustainable development, ArcelorMittal Liberia has invested over US$58,000 into the latest phase of its Biodiversity and Conservation Program, aimed at supporting nine communities along the Yarmein belt in Nimba County.

The initiative, carried out in partnership with local NGO Humanity Care Liberia, focuses on climate-smart agriculture.

By introducing practices such as vegetable farming, piggery, poultry, and swamp rice cultivation, the program seeks to empower over 60 local stakeholders while reducing pressure on Liberia’s forest resources.

The official launch event in Baapa brought together community leaders and ArcelorMittal representatives, who jointly highlighted the dual mission of the program: enhancing livelihoods and protecting the region’s biodiversity.

“This program isn’t about profits for AML—it’s about building self-sufficiency for farmers,” said Samuel Peter, Superintendent for Biodiversity and Conservation at ArcelorMittal Liberia.

Participants receive essential tools, seeds, and food support, with all produce and income remaining in the hands of the local communities—a model designed to foster long-term resilience and self-reliance.
