According to the LNP, the money was discovered on Tuesday, October 6, at about 1:52 p.m., during a search of a Liberian-registered vehicle bearing plate number A53191. The vehicle was reportedly driven by 58-year-old Abu Toure of Brewerville.
The police said preliminary investigations indicate that the cash had not been declared at the Liberia-Sierra Leone border.
Toure reportedly told investigators that the money represented proceeds from his cocoa business.
Following the discovery, Toure was taken into custody, while the matter was referred to the Financial Crime Division of the LNP and the Liberia Revenue Authority for further investigation.
The LNP says investigations remain ongoing and no final determination has been made regarding whether any Liberian law was violated.
The police also commended officers assigned to the Tienii Checkpoint for their vigilance and said it remains committed to working with relevant institutions to combat financial crimes, money laundering and other activities that could threaten Liberia’s economic and national security.
