MONROVIA – In a landmark moment for the nation’s healthcare system, Liberia has officially received its first Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine dedicated to a public health facility.

Health Minister Dr. Louise Kpoto celebrated the milestone, declaring, “HISTORY HAS ARRIVED! Liberia’s MRI machine is here! For the first time in post-war Liberia, an MRI will be installed at a public health facility, JFK Medical Center.”
The state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment will be housed at the John F. Kennedy (JFK) Medical Center in Monrovia, bringing advanced medical imaging capabilities to thousands of Liberians who previously had no access to such technology within the public healthcare sector.
An MRI machine uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to generate high-resolution, three-dimensional cross-sectional images of the internal structures of the body.
Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI technology operates without harmful ionizing radiation, making it an exceptionally safe and highly effective tool for diagnosing complex neurological, musculoskeletal, and soft-tissue conditions.
The installation of the unit at JFK Medical Center marks a major leap forward in diagnostic medicine for the country, reducing the need for patients to seek costly medical travel abroad for advanced diagnostics and significantly elevating the standard of care available in Liberia’s public hospitals.
