MONROVIA – The Ministry of Justice has confirmed a jailbreak at the Kakata Central Prison in Margibi County, with a number of inmates escaping from the facility.

The Ministry said the Joint Security of Liberia has been alerted and has launched a search and recapture operation for the escaped inmates.

Security personnel are currently searching for and pursuing the escapees as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Bureau of Corrections and Rehabilitation is also conducting a verification and reconciliation of prison records to establish the exact number and identities of the inmates who escaped.

The Ministry said the names and other identifying information of the escapees will be released once the verification process is completed, in an effort to assist security authorities and members of the public in locating and recapturing them.

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any information about the whereabouts of the escaped inmates to the nearest police station or other security authorities.

The Ministry specifically warned members of the public against attempting to apprehend the escapees themselves or providing them with shelter.

The Joint Security is expected to provide further updates as the search and investigation continue.
