MONROVIA – The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Agriculture, will officially dedicate the newly constructed Fagonda River Dam in Kolahun District, Lofa County, on Saturday, June 14, 2025.
The event marks a major milestone in Liberia’s ongoing efforts to achieve food security and agricultural self-sufficiency.
The $650,000 project—fully funded by the Government of Liberia and implemented by the Liberia Qiang Shen Group, a Chinese construction firm—is designed to power a modern irrigation system that will enable year-round rice cultivation on over 250 acres of government-owned lowland.
This initiative is part of the national “Liberians Feed Yourselves” agenda, an ambitious strategy aimed at reducing rice imports by at least 70% by the year 2030 and significantly boosting domestic agricultural production.
Construction of the dam began in early February 2025 and was completed in just 70 working days, a testament to efficient planning and implementation by the government and its partners.
Beyond its economic impact, the new dam also breathes new life into a historic agricultural zone formerly managed by AGROMECO in the 1960s.
Once a major hub for rice farming, Kolahun is now set to reclaim its legacy as part of Liberia’s agricultural heartland.
The dedication ceremony is expected to draw a wide range of government officials, local leaders, farmers, and development partners who will gather to celebrate this critical advancement in Liberia’s agricultural development.
