Liberia Welcomes First Semi-Industrial Fiberglass Fishing Vessel

By: Kabinah Kaba

Monrovia – Liberia’s fisheries sector is set for a major transformation with the arrival of “The Sea King,” the country’s first fiberglass semi-industrial fishing vessel.

The state-of-the-art vessel, constructed in Oman with support from the World Bank under the Liberia Sustainable Management of Fisheries Project (LSMFP), signals a new era of sustainable fishing, advanced technology, and economic opportunity.

The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) has announced plans to engage a private sector partner—preferably a Liberian company—to manage the vessel under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP).

Officials say the initiative will create jobs, boost productivity, and strengthen local participation in the fishing industry.

“This isn’t just a ship; it’s a symbol of transformation for Liberia’s blue economy,” a NaFAA representative said.

The arrival of “The Sea King” underscores Liberia’s commitment to responsible resource management while opening fresh opportunities for economic growth and community development.
