The anniversary will be held under the theme, “62 Years On: Empowering Independent Media for Democracy, Accountability, and Sustainable Development.”

According to the PUL, the occasion will highlight its longstanding efforts to protect journalists’ rights, promote freedom of speech and expression, and advocate for accountable democratic governance in Liberia.

The celebration will begin with a grand parade through Monrovia, followed by an indoor program featuring motivational speeches and a high-level panel discussion on ways to empower independent media to contribute to democracy, accountability, and national development.

As part of the anniversary activities, the PUL will also release a report from the National Media Council of Liberia detailing cases investigated involving alleged ethical breaches, press freedom infringements, and challenges to freedom of speech and expression.

The Union says the celebration comes at a significant time as it renews efforts to construct its National Headquarters, which is envisioned as a permanent center for press freedom, professional development, ethical journalism, and the protection of journalists.

About 150 participants, including journalists, media practitioners, civil society representatives, journalism students, government officials, diplomats, and private-sector stakeholders, are expected to attend the celebration.

The PUL says the full itinerary, including the names of motivational speakers and panelists from the fields of development finance, investment, diplomacy, law, government, and media, will be released on Monday, September 28.

The Union is encouraging journalists, media and communication practitioners, and members of the public to participate in the anniversary, which it says will provide opportunities for learning, networking, dialogue, professional exchange, and strengthening solidarity within Liberia’s media community.
