The Impasse at the House of Representative has lasted for months now with leaders of the two factions ( Majority and Manority), Representative RICHARD NAGBE KOON and embattled Speaker J. FONATI KOFFA claiming legitimacy.

The majority voted to oust embattled Speaker Koffa, commissioning Representative Richard Nagbe Koon as the new Speaker of the Lower House. The process to replace the Grand Kru County District #1 Lawmaker from the Opposition Congress for Democratic Change ( CDC) with Montserrado County #11 Lawmaker and Stalwart of the ruling Unity Party( UP) has been met with mixed reactions from Liberians at home and abroad.

Embattled Speaker Koffa and his team have since refused to sit under the gavel of the majority Speaker who they claimed was illegally elected without adhering to the rules of the body.

As the situation took a center stage with claims and counter-claims, Koffa and his minority took flight to the Supreme Court  to compel their colleagues who are conducting parallel sessions to return under the gavel of embattled Speaker J. Fonati Koffa.

The Supreme Court listened to arguments from both sides before a ruling that many termed as ambitious and confused, leaving the conflicting factions with no alternative but to interpret the ruling in their favor.

In the High Court ruling, it stated clearly, there was no existing instrument/law that it would use to compel the majority to join the minority.

The ruling felt short of stating who was in compliance with the law and who was in violation but requested both parties to return and do the needful in line with articles 33 and 49 of the Liberian Constitution.

Following months of political disagreements, the embattled Speaker again filed a Bill of Information before the Supreme Court, seeking  a definite and clearer interpretation of the ruling. Lawyers representing Koffa and the Minority have requested the High Court to deem every action taken by the Majority elected Speaker, Richard Nagbe Koon and his team illegal.

In line with the Court’s mandate, Lawyers representing both factions appeared before the full bench of the Supreme Court on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, arguing while either of their side was proceeding rightly.

Justices of the court listened to their different arguments/submissions and reserve ruling.

The Liberia Excellent News Network calls on the Supreme Court which is the arbitral of Justice to be very decisive in its ruling in the bill of Information filed before it by Koffa and his team.

We believe that the lack of clear understanding of the first ruling by the High Court led to the chaos and political bickering at the House of Representatives which had undermined and assaulted Liberia’s emerging democracy.

Let the court’s ruling be done in line with available laws or the constitution of Liberia and must be clear to avoid ambiguity and further injury on the Country’s young but flourishing democracy.
