Paynesville – Pro-Democracy Group, Naymote Partners for Democratic Development is calling on President Joseph Boakai to prioritize a comprehensive review of the nation’s constitution to reinforce governance, uphold democracy, and ensure the rule of law.
Speaking in Paynesville, Naymote Executive Director Eddie Jarwolo emphasized the urgent need to modernize the 1986 Constitution, which he described as outdated and inadequate in addressing the country’s evolving legal, political, and social landscape.
Mr. Jarwolo urged the Boakai administration to lead a transparent and inclusive reform process that would restore public trust in government institutions.
Naymote outlined key areas for review, including judicial reforms to establish specialized courts, electoral system improvements, stronger protections for women’s political participation, and clearer separation of powers within government.
Liberia’s current constitution, last amended nearly four decades ago, has yet to undergo significant reforms to promote judicial independence and prevent political manipulation.
Mr. Jarwolo stressed that updating the constitution is crucial for political stability, civic participation, and accountability.
