Sisters with Impact Extends Support to THINK-Liberia after Shocking Fire Tragedy

By: G. Watson Richards

Monrovia, Liberia – Sisters with Impact, a humanitarian organization based in the United States, has shown support for several orphanages, groups, and clinics across Montserrado and surrounding areas.

Among the recipients is the orphanage Touching Humanity in Needs of Kindness (THINK-Liberia), which recently suffered a devastating fire that claimed the lives of two disabled orphans.

THINK-Liberia, located in the GSA Road community in Paynesville, was struck by a tragic fire in March 2025, leading to deaths and making several orphans homeless.

The fire completely destroyed the orphanage, and the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

THINK-Liberia’s mission focuses on rehabilitation and reintegration, child protection, prevention and response to sexual exploitation and abuse, sexual and gender-based violence, early childhood care, sexual and reproductive health for adolescent girls, and advocacy for economic empowerment of women, particularly market women.

Madam Musu Yah Taiwan, the manager of THINK-Liberia, informed Sisters with Impact about the heartbreaking loss.

According to here, the two victims who perished in the fire were disabled and unable to escape the blaze.

Madam Taiwan and members of Sisters with Impact were visibly emotional as they heard the tragic details of the incident.

“Most of the children had gone to school when the fire broke out, and a few who were left behind managed to escape, which may have minimized the number of casualties,” said Madam Taiwan. “But two of the children, who had special needs, were in their beds and couldn’t move. They were crying for help, but nobody could save them. They died a painful death,” she added, tears streaming down her face.

Orphans in Need of Shelter

The orphanage, which previously housed 22 children, is now in dire need of a new shelter.

Madam Taiwan pleaded for urgent support from Sisters with Impact and other humanitarian organizations to help secure a safe home for the children, who are currently being housed temporarily in another orphanage.

“We have asked another orphanage to help us keep the children for now. We don’t want to keep burdening them, so we are hoping to find a permanent place for these children,” she said. “These children need urgent assistance. We need a place where they can feel safe again.”

She expressed deep gratitude to the humanitarian organization for the timely donation of food, clothing, and other supplies.

In response to the heartbreaking situation, Madam Helena Ekem, Founder and CEO of Sisters with Impact who was overwhelmed with emotions pledged that her organization would do everything possible to support the orphanage and the children in need.

“We are committed to helping THINK-Liberia rebuild, whether it’s through donations, providing shelter, or any other means of support,” said Madam Ekem.

“We’re here to give back to our homeland, and we will work with you to make sure these children have a safe place to call home.”

Sisters with Impact Visit Clinics

Sisters with Impact also visited several clinics and hospitals during their trip, including the James Davis Hospital in Paynesville, the Goodwill Clinic on the 21st street in Fiamah.

The group made rounds of donations, including to Teta Young, who had given birth to twins via C-section in 2023 and was in critical condition at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital.

This U.S.-based humanitarian group stepped in to contribute $500.00 towards Teta’s medical expenses and provided food and cash donations for her family’s upkeep after Teta was discharged from the hospital in 2024. Sisters with Impact returned to Teta’s home for another round of cash donations to help her continue her recovery.

Teta and her mother expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Sisters with Impact, who have played a key role in Teta’s significant improvement. Her condition is steadily improving, with swelling in her abdomen and feet reduced, and a second surgery now planned.

The ongoing support of Sisters with Impact has been a beacon of hope for those in need, bringing relief to children, mothers, and families throughout Liberia.
