LNBA Warns Against Violence as Voters go to the Polls in Nimba

By: Cooper K. Sangar Jr.

MONROVIA – The Liberian National Bar Association says attempt by anyone to subvert the will of the eligible voters of Nimba or destabilize the peace and security of the county constitutes a grave threat to Liberia’s Democratic gains and national stability.

Liberians across Nimba County are currently participating in a by-election created as a result of the county’s late Senator Prince Johnson who died in 2024.

The political campaign before the election was marred by tribal, traditional and anti-feminist divide.

The President of the Bar Cllr. Bornor Varmah told a news conference on Monday April 22, 2025 that while the country continues to strengthen its democratic credentials, it is imperative that all eligible voters exercise their rights peacefully, responsibly, and in a manner that upholds the rule of law, as such Nimbians should be allowed to freely exercise their democratic franchise void of conflict and intimidation.

“The Bar is closely monitoring developments in Nimba County, and will not hesitate to recommend appropriate sanctions, both domestically and internationally, against individuals or groups found to be undermining democratic process or promoting instability” Cllr. Varmah cautioned.

He urged all political actors, community leaders and citizens to uphold the rule of law, maintain peace and respect the constitutional rights of all eligible voters in Nimba County.

Cllr. Varmah further called on Political Parties, Independent Candidates and their supporters to revert to conducting themselves with civility and respect for the Democratic process, stressing that “acts of intimidation, incitement or electoral violence must be avoided and where committed, must be addressed through the appropriate legal channels.”

The Bar’s President then underscored limited civic and voter education across remote areas of Nimba County, logistical and administrative support as factors that might undermine public confidence in the process.

He at the same time commended the National Election Commission for its commitment to upholding the integrity of Liberia’s electoral process, thus urging Nimbians to actively engaged with the voting process tomorrow.
