Red Cross Bomi Branch Launches Urgent Appeal for Disaster Response Support

By: Gabriel M.C Parker

BOMI COUNTY – The Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRC) Bomi branch has launched an urgent appeal for support to enhance its ability to respond to natural disasters and other emergencies across the county.

Speaking to journalists in Tubmanburg, Zinnah D. Quaye, Bomi Field Officer of the LNRC, expressed concern over the organization’s growing challenges in responding effectively to crises due to limited financial resources.

“Our ability to respond is extremely limited at the moment,” Quaye stated. “We are appealing to local stakeholders and community members to support our work—because disasters do not wait for funding.”

According to Quaye, delays in financial assistance from both national and international partners have left the Bomi branch ill-equipped during critical emergencies such as floods, house fires, and storms. He noted that while the International Federation of the Red Cross currently prioritizes countries experiencing war or major catastrophes, Liberia—though not in crisis—still faces frequent emergencies that significantly affect people’s lives.

“Liberia may not make international headlines for war or destruction,” he said, “but people here are suffering from disasters that deeply impact their livelihoods. We cannot ignore those daily struggles.”

Quaye recalled the LNRC Bomi branch’s history of providing emergency relief and food aid to disaster victims throughout the county. However, he stressed that the current financial situation is a major constraint, even limiting their ability to respond to minor incidents.

Despite these challenges, he affirmed the local Red Cross team’s unwavering commitment to its humanitarian mission. “We are ready to serve,” he emphasized, “but without support from the community and local leadership, our capacity will remain severely limited.”

Quaye issued a direct appeal to Bomi County’s leadership—including the superintendent’s office, district commissioners, and community-based organizations—to actively support the Red Cross’s efforts. He also called on ordinary citizens to view the Red Cross as their own and contribute in any way possible, whether through cash donations or material support.

“We are not asking for much,” he added. “Even the smallest contribution can make a big difference when disaster strikes.”

This heartfelt appeal comes as the LNRC joins the global Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in observing International Red Cross Month—a time dedicated to recognizing the humanitarian service and impact of the movement worldwide.

As the celebrations continue, the Bomi branch hopes its message will resonate with residents and leaders alike, ensuring that the Red Cross remains a trusted first responder in future emergencies.
