Tension and Transparency: LNP Investigates Controversial Arrest of CDC Chairman

MONROVIA – The Liberia National Police (LNP) is facing mounting public scrutiny following the recent arrest of Mr. Janga Kowo, Chairman of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), one of Liberia’s most influential political parties.

In an official statement released today, the LNP confirmed that Mr. Kowo’s arrest was carried out on the basis of probable cause. However, the police also noted that he was promptly released upon arrival at police headquarters after preliminary assessments.

Despite the quick release, the manner in which the arrest was conducted—reportedly involving plainclothes officers and alleged excessive force—has ignited public debate and raised questions about police procedures, especially concerning high-profile figures.

In response to the backlash, the Inspector General of Police has ordered a full internal review. The Professional Standards Division is now analyzing video evidence, officer bodycam footage, and eyewitness accounts to determine whether any misconduct occurred.

“The Liberia National Police is committed to transparency and accountability,” the statement read. “We understand the public’s concern, and we will ensure that the findings of the investigation are made available to the public.”

The statement also underscored the LNP’s continued commitment to upholding law and order, while urging citizens to respect legal procedures and support the ongoing review. “Public safety is not the job of one institution alone—it is a shared responsibility,” the police emphasized.

As the investigation proceeds, the LNP is urging the public to avoid speculation and misinformation, encouraging citizens to rely on verified information from official sources.

For many Liberians, the incident has revived discussions about police reform, political transparency, and civil liberties. While some see the arrest as a routine enforcement of the law, others fear it reflects deeper political tensions simmering beneath the surface.

As the nation watches closely, the coming days may determine not only the outcome of this investigation but the broader public trust in law enforcement institutions.
