NIMBA COUNTY – A tragic motor accident has claimed the lives of four individuals in Nimba County, including a police officer, a rape suspect, a key witness, and a member of the Community Watch Forum.
The group was traveling from Tappita to Sanniquellie when the fatal crash occurred near Loyee Creek along the Tappita–Saclepea highway in District #7. All four victims died instantly at the scene.
According to eyewitness reports, the suspect, 38-year-old Larmie Samuo from River Cess County, was resisting transport to Sanniquellie for further investigation in a rape case.
Among the deceased was 14-year-old Blessings Thomas, the key witness in the case and the alleged victim who was scheduled to testify.
Ephrian Bundeah, an officer with the Liberia National Police’s Police Support Unit (PSU), was accompanying the suspect at the time of the incident.
Also killed was Junior Walkbeah, a member of the Community Watch Forum, who was reportedly tasked with transporting the suspect on a motorbike.
Local media reports indicate that the lack of vehicles at police stations and magisterial courts across Nimba County continues to be a major challenge. The scarcity of transportation has led to delays in transferring suspects and witnesses, sometimes with devastating consequences.
“This incident is yet another reminder of the dire need for logistical support in our justice system,” a local official noted. “Without reliable transportation, the lives of both law enforcement personnel and civilians are at risk.”
This marks the second major tragedy of its kind in the county. The region’s magisterial courts have long faced operational hurdles, including high legal fees for victims and limited infrastructure. These challenges often hinder access to justice and have fueled growing frustration among residents.
In past years, public anger over such systemic failures has led to violent demostrations, including the burning of police stations in Tappita and Saclepea by outraged communities.
This most recent tragedy underscores the urgent need for improved resources and infrastructure to ensure the safe and timely administration of justice in Nimba County.
