Weah Accuses President Boakai of Masterminding CDC Headquarters Eviction

MONROVIA – Former President George Weah has accused President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and his Unity Party-led government of being behind the eviction and demolition of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) headquarters in Congo Town, describing the act as a politically motivated attempt to silence the opposition.

In a statement issued following the weekend eviction carried out by court officers with police support, Weah called the incident “unfortunate and regrettable,” but urged his supporters and Liberians in general to remain calm, law-abiding, and respectful of due process.

“Fellow Liberians, today we witnessed yet another testament of the Unity Party government’s gross disregard for the rule of law,” Weah said. “Emboldened by impunity, they continue to abuse power, testing our nation’s fragile peace and democracy.”

He accused President Boakai of personally instructing the police to enforce the eviction before the CDC’s legal challenges over the property were fully exhausted.

“This was not a lawful eviction; it was a failed mission to destroy and erase the CDC in an attempt to fulfil the very wish Boakai has repeatedly expressed to his lieutenants,” Weah alleged.

Despite his sharp criticism of the government, the former President called on CDC partisans and sympathizers to resist violence.

“Resist the temptation to take the law into your own hands,” he said. “However disappointed we are by this outcome, I call on each of you to continue respecting the law and due process.”

Weah reassured his supporters that the loss of the party’s headquarters was only temporary and announced the creation of a Special National Headquarters Delivery Committee to spearhead the construction of a new, modern facility.

He also disclosed plans for a nationwide tour to engage partisans and rally support.

“The Unity Party leadership under Boakai are destroyers, but we are builders,” he declared, adding that the CDC’s strength lies not in “bricks and mortar” but in the resilience and determination of its supporters.

The eviction of the CDC from the Bernard estate, awarded to the family of the late Martha Stubblefield Bernard following a prolonged court battle, has triggered heated political debate.

While some legal experts, including CDC Senator Augustine Chea, have defended the court’s ruling as lawful, the party’s standard-bearer Weah insists the action was driven by political motives.
