Former Speaker Koffa Criticizes Government Over Mass Home Demolitions

NATIONAL NEWS

MONROVIA – Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Jonathan Fonati Koffa, has sharply criticized the Liberian government for its mass demolition of homes across Monrovia and rural districts, calling the actions “mean-spirited” and urging a more humane approach to relocating displaced families.

His remarks, shared on social media, invoked a biblical call to compassion, reigniting a contentious national debate over urban development and human rights.

Since late December 2025, government contractors under the Ministry of Public Works have demolished over 1,200 structures in informal settlements labeled “illegal” or “unsafe.” Targeted areas include Gardnersville, Duwla, District #17, and the Saye Town community.

Officials have cited fire hazards, sanitation challenges, and infrastructure projects—such as a new highway interchange and public market—as justifications for the demolitions.

Koffa, however, argues that the evictions lack empathy and foresight. “It is mean-spirited to demolish people’s homes without a relocation plan, whether or not they are squatters.

Whatever you do to the least of these…” he emphasized, “the ‘least’ are fellow Liberians struggling to put a roof over their heads.”

His comments highlight both moral and humanitarian responsibility in government actions.

While authorities frame the campaign as part of urban renewal, Koffa pointed out the absence of clear compensation or relocation programs, leaving vulnerable families displaced.

The controversy has sparked broader conversations about land rights, equitable development, and the tension between modernization and social welfare.
